About Pullenvale Ward

The Pullenvale Ward is a vast and diverse ward in Brisbane's west covering approximately 400 sq kms. It comprises the suburbs of Kenmore, Kenmore Hills, Pullenvale, Pinjarra Hills, Brookfield, Upper Brookfield, Moggill, Bellbowrie, Anstead, Karana Downs, Mt Crosby, Lake Manchester, Kholo and parts of Chapel Hill and Chuwar.

History

Indigenous people of the Jagera and Turrbal groups once occupied the area that now makes up the Pullenvale Ward. Evidence of indigenous occupation includes the discovery of axe heads and sharpening stones as well as several bora ring sites. The area's largest bora ring, with a diameter of 22 metres, is at the end of Riversleigh Road, Bellbowrie. Many of the Ward's place names are derived from Aboriginal words: Moggill comes from 'Magil' which means water dragon and Bellbowrie means 'place of flowering gums'.

Pioneer settlement of the Pullenvale Ward began in the mid 19th century, and, in those early years, was dominated by logging and farming. The Ward remained mostly rural until the 1960s and 1970s when housing development began in earnest.

Features

The Pullenvale Ward is leafy and green, with a rural atmosphere that makes it attractive to residents. Having such abundant bushland close to the city creates an enviable quality of life.

The bush, parks, creeks and river are home to many different types of native flora and fauna, and the Ward boasts several very active environmental groups.

People

While the Ward attracts a diverse group of residents, it is particularly popular with professionals and families, attracted by the rural atmosphere and community spirit. Most dwellings in the area are stand-alone houses and acreage-blocks are a feature of some suburbs such as Mt Crosby, Kholo, Pullenvale, Brookfield & Upper Brookfield, Pinjarra Hills, Anstead, and Moggill.

People have come from all over the world to make their home in the Pullenvale Ward. Most residents born overseas are from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States of America and Germany. Other than English, the top five languages spoken at home in the Ward are Chinese, German, Japanese, Italian and French.

Residents of the Pullenvale Ward are known for their strong sense of community and willingness to get involved. The area is home to several active environmental groups and other community organisations concerned with local issues including development, the aged and the disabled, as well as Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Rotary, CWA, View, Girl Guides and Scouts.

Services

Despite having a rural feel, the Pullenvale Ward benefits from many community services, including the Brisbane City Council's bus and Council Cab services and a mobile library.  A number of Personalised Public Transport (PPT) maxi-cabs operate in areas where scheduled TransLink public transport services do not exist.

Kenmore is the main business area for the Ward although shops, schools, medical services, restaurants and cafes can be found throughout the area.
