New work to start on State’s worst road

04 January, 2010

Queensland’s worst road – Gap Creek Road from Kenmore to The Gap – will be a ‘No through Road’ from January 4 as work begins in earnest on a $14 million safety upgrade.

Acting Lord Mayor Jane Prentice asked people to be patient while Council completed the next stage of road works over the next four months.

Cr Prentice said Gap Creek Road was voted ‘Queensland’s worst local government road’ by the RACQ after a survey of its members found widespread disdain for the old gravel track.

“This is a critical project which is being carefully handled to ensure minimal environmental damage to this area The Gap and Kenmore Hills,” she said.

“Council could have done this project faster but it would have involved the destruction of parts of forest to allow for temporary tracks and we decided to put the environment first.”

Cr Prentice said Council would keep the speed limit of the road through Brisbane Forest Park to a low 50 km/h, the same as residential areas.

She said a huge amount of community and local environment group consultation had gone into the project, with many ideas put forward adopted by Council.

“There will be good outcomes for wildlife with safe passage for native animals via under-road crossings, and dust kicked up by vehicles should no longer be a problem, because of the resealing,” she said.

As part of the upgrade, Gap Creek Rd, between the Gap Creek Reserve car park and Highwood Rd, will be closed for four months from January 4.

Gap Creek Rd and Dillon Rd provide the only north–south connection between Kenmore Hills and The Gap.

Motorists and residents who need to access properties on Gap Creek Rd are asked to enter the road via the Brookfield Rd end of the corridor while those needing to access properties on Dillon Rd or Highwood Rd will have to enter via the Payne Rd end of the corridor.
